El protagonista es Robert Olmstead, un chico que viaja por Nueva Inglaterra en 1927 para conocer lugares nuevos e investigar la historia de su propia familia. Durante el viaje descubre un pequeño pueblo costero llamado Innsmouth, un lugar extraño, decadente y bastante inquietante, cuyos habitantes tienen un aspecto peculiar y del que circulan unas leyendas relacionadas con el mar y las profundidades.
Robert decide visitarlo pensando que será simplemente una parada interesante durante su viaje... pero las cosas no salen como esperaba.

Robert decides to visit, thinking it will simply be an interesting stop along his journey... but things don’t turn out quite as he expected.
